Where it all started...

20" x 16"
Acrylic on Canvas
Summer 1999 - Stifel Fine Arts Center
For this painting, I toned the canvas a cream color to match the hibiscus, drew out my composition and painted several layers to achieve the final results. For her dress and wings, I thinned out the acrylic paint with water to create subtle glazes of color. The subtle greens in the background and purple fairy dust were achieved with a dry brushing technique. During the painting class, a patron of the small museum wandered into our classroom and asked if he could purchase the painting from me once it was completed. He gave me his business card and asked me to call him when it was done. I ultimately decided not to sell it, but his gesture bouyoed my confidence as a painter, and will forever be a fond memory. This was my first painting on canvas and immediately I knew I was in love with painting.

(I will forever be in the debt of my creative and artistically gifted cousin Melinda for suggesting that we take that summer painting course together. It was during that class that I decided that I must someday become an artist.)
